Deep purple, fragrant (like freshly cut apples), tulip shaped flowers to 15cm wide are carried on the bare stems before the leaves emerge in September (in Canberra). The leaves are large and dark green from mid-spring until autumn when they turn deep golden yellow.
Black Tulip has a very neat, upright and well-branched structure to approx. 4m tall and 2m wide.
An excellent feature tree. Slow to moderate growth makes it suitable for any sized garden. Do not prune in spring.
Very highly recommended.
All Magnolias prefer slightly moist, fertile well-drained soil that is slightly acidic.
Sunny to part shade position protected from wind.
